Part of an old Brooks Tradition

I haven't seen many or if any comments really on the brooks hackney backpack, So my thought on it as working in a bike shop, an avid cyclist, and a every day commuter is that ths backpack is more than generous with room. I can fit a large amount to stuff in it and still feels weightless on my back! I have ridden with it on everyday for the past 2 weeks and the leather on the back is great padding just as comfortable as a nice broken in brooks saddle. It is durable to take some beating and nice and water proof for when you get stuck in the rain. It looks high class and elegant yet can be worn with anything. It's a business casual of packs. I really like how on the inside there is a small zipper pocket to store up small items so they do not roll around in the bottom of the bag. The side spots to hold water bottles on the backpack are great, I carry a thermos full of coffee in it every day and it stays secure and snug in the holder. All in all its a great backpack with a ton of room, a elegant design for any occasion.

I'm a bike commuter in Seattle, so need to confirm that this bag is in fact waterproof? I found a site that said the bag is made from "bluesign® standard waterproof textile," but I'm not sure whether this is classified as truly waterproof or just water resistant?
A> yes this bag is waterproof

I think Brooks need to be clearer with the definition of waterproof. The fabric of the bag is waterproof yes but that does not make the bag itself waterproof. The seams are not taped so they leak, especially at the front pocket where water collects and gets soaked up by the foam at the bottom. Something I unfortunately had to experience with my camera, notebook and passport inside. Brooks have been nice so far and offered me a new backpack, although a different colour. Expect a very good looking bag but its not waterproof.

Purchased in summer of 2014. Several rivets holding the straps to the bag fell out after 1 month of light use.

Nice fabric, huge amount of storage space, but had to return to vendor.

I hope the quality control has improved!

I've had this bag (in black) for about a year now and I must admit it's one of the best things I've ever bought – it looks really smart, it's tough and super flexible. Combined with a couple of bungee straps you can use it to carry (almost) anything.
Sadly, there are a few serious drawbacks: whilst the fabric itself seems to be 100% waterproof, the seams aren't. This isn't a problem in a drizzle, but since I cycle quite a long distance almost every day I always have to put my laptop in a plastic bag first in case I get seriously wet.
In which case, what's more, the leather yoke WILL stain your clothing, especially lighter coats and tops, and so far I've not managed to get those stains out. This is also an issue with light t-shirts if you're on a trip on a very hot day or generally start sweating quickly. So in addition to that plastic bag I now also always carry a waterproof cape that I can wear over the backpack – unfortunately this only keeps the rain out with the hood on though, so less than ideal in city traffic as it really limits your field of vision.
Last but not least, I use this bag every day and literally cycle everywhere, and it's a real shame that there's no additional short strap attached to the yoke. You can't really put a wallet or phone in the outside pockets and I haven't yet managed to figure out a good way of opening the bag while holding it – except standing on one leg and resting the bag on my thigh, which unfortunately lacks the elegance that comes with this bag in any other situation.
This bag's not cheap, and I think if you're willing to spend so much money on something it really should be second to none. I'm sure I wouldn't have minded another tenner or so for another strap and sealed seams.
