With Eroica Britannia rapidly approaching, we decided it was a fitting time to catch up with Tim, one of the organisers, and find out what is new for 2015 and what to expect for the weekend. From what he told us it seems we are in for one fantastic weekend and a very enjoyable fathers' day.
So we are now approaching the second edition of Eroica Britannia, following the triumph that was 2014, how can you better it in 2015?
We will find out soon! We have double the amount of riders, up to nearly 4,000. We also have much more happening at the festival. There is an amazing entertainment line up on the Hullabaloo live stage. Even better street food vendors at our Graze food festival. One to watch is Best in Show prizes, for bikes, ladies, gentleman and even dogs! We have got brilliant talks happening such as Warp films director and producer in discussion about their up and coming film on Tommy Simpson. We have an interview with first the British tour de France stage winner in 1958 Brian Robinson. Brian is also riding on Sunday. Volvo are bringing an original Eddie Merckx team car. The festival is so geared up to families this year. We have a Great British Beach and a vintage fairground including a helter skelter! A family ride on the Saturday. So much is happening along with a vintage sportsday which I'm personally looking forward to the most!
This year many more people know about Eroica Britannia, the festival and Eroica the brand in general so we are expecting a huge turn out over the weekend.
Last year was fantastic with numerous highlights but what was your top moment?
We knew when we first rode the routes almost 3 years ago now that we had something incredible on our hands. The festival part took real commitment to deliver but when you have literally hundreds of riders and festival goers telling us it's been the best weekend they have had...that...after all the effort is the best bit by far. We wanted to create a world class weekend and we achieved it. It's The Most Handsome Festival after all.
The Eroica Britannia roadshow has been on the move again, notably with the caravan at Spin LDN, where is the best place the event has taken you?
Spin was fab and it's nice to bring a little piece of Eroica Britannia around the county. We also did Wayne Hemmingway’s Classic Car Boot on the Southbank which again was great fun. We have so many ideas to take Eroica Britannia on the road throughout the year and into next. Maybe mini rides too. The Eroica brand is growing globally and our goal is to keep pushing our very own very Eroica Britishness around the country. Look out for us at The London Nocturne too!
Has the challenge of setting up the event been easier following the success in 2014?
Two points of view really. One we have a track record and a years worth of knowledge and we know how to make things better but then we have the pressure and expectation of making every year better than before. We are just a bunch of mates who started this because we like a laugh and to ride bikes. The goal is to build something that we would want to go to ourselves.
This year we have seen the launch of a full scale festival to celebrate the event, what have we got to look forward to?
I've described the festival prèviously and we have so much to do and see. But let's not forget nearly 4000 riders! They are the beating heart of Eroica Britannia. All on vintage Bikes. Riding out from Bakewell and out into the glorious Peak District National Park. Stopping at all the wonderful food stops en-route through stunning scenery and incredible villages, through Chatsworth Estate and back to Bakewell for a well earned Eroica Britannia 'Handsome' beer and a good old knees up!
Are we going to see you riding the bicycle this year?
You will but I'll make my own pilgrimage on the Monday after the event. You will however see me riding my 1954 Motoguzzi Galleto with probably a cameraman on my back!
How can people still get involved in the weekend?
The ride sold out weeks ago but come along to the festival. 200 vendors. 30 food trucks. Loads to do. So much fun. Great for families and kids along with cool hangouts for the hipsters. 3 days of brilliant fun all for £10. So much happening everyday with the epic ride on the Sunday. Drinking Handsome beer in Bakewell, listening to music while watching all the riders come home. What could be better than that?
Thanks for making the time to catch up Tim. We have been looking forward to this since the moment last year's festival ended. See you in Bakewell!
