B1 Leather Bag

Availability: In stock

Made in England

Brooks is proud to announce the fruit of our successful collaboration with the Royal College of Art in London (RCA). For the first time a new range of moulded leather bags will be produced in the Brooks saddle factory in Smethwick, England, using the same machinery and techniques employed to make famous Brooks Leather Saddles. The shape is based on the width of the famous B17 saddle, Brooks most iconic model, for the B1 and B2 bags, and twice that width for the larger B3 edition. The B1 can be fitted on the bike by attaching the bag to the saddle loops, or the bag may also be worn on a belt, or as a shoulder bag thanks to the detachable strap that accompanies it.

Part of an old Brooks Tradition

B1 Leather Bag
I really admire how your company have updated your product line with creative and useful items, that continue the Brooks tradition. Already a very comprehensive set to choose from for all seasons, with ingenious innovations, and integrated functionality across different pieces, that show the cyclist brain at work. I hope in this throwaway age of quick fixes people appreciate the value of such, and of things that are built to last, and that you can continue to expand.

One thing that I'm hoping is at least on the cards by now, is a nice leather wallet, utilising the craftmanship garnered from the saddle and now bag making. Perhaps in the same colour choices - black, honey, racing green etc. I'd definitely buy that, even if it left me with little to actually put in it! XD

B1 Leather Bag
Its the saddle bag you've always wanted - well at least its the saddle bag *I've* always wanted with a few caveats.

Pros

1. It fits a mini U lock plus a good deal of accessories perfectly! (Note to Brooks - Its clear that the designer intended a U Lock fitment given your videos, but shockingly the fact that the B1 and B2 saddle bags fit the mini and standard size U locks is never once mentioned in the descriptions)

2. The bag comes with an awesome shoulder strap so that you can carry it around after you've locked up your bike - I'm a city rider so this is a BIG plus as the bag would definitely get stolen if left outside

3. The molding is great and the bag looks amazing - its a little feminine b/c its so small, but the strap is manly and the bag looks similar to a camera bag. I'm cool pulling it off.

Cons

1. You have this awesome strap, but you'll be hard pressed to find a place to actually PUT it when the bag is attached to saddle. Your options are to (a) try and tuck in inside the bag (b) wedge it within the saddle straps (c) just wear the damn strap sans bag - Unfortunately all of these are compromises and in cases a and b if you are unlucky and the strap slowly falls out of its tucked in position the strap can end up getting dirty on your wheel. In case c, you then have to take the time to reconnect the strap which is a hassle

2. Its a bit of a hassle taking the thing on and off the bike. Fortunately they didn't use buckles and instead used a press on type connector, but the strap assembles on the inside of the bag so if its fully, you may have to remove some items to easily remove the bag from your saddle

3. One day you may have to replace the saddle straps b/c they will wear on the sharp Brooks saddle loops eventually if you use the bag with high frequency. Hope Brooks offers the part or you know a good leather worker in your area if that happens.

Conclusion: I think if Brooks offer a an updated version 2 they could easily fix these problems. For my purposes, the bag is good enough and I'm happy with my purchase, but if they offered a V2 this bag could be perfect and more deserving of the high price tag for what is just a saddle bag that can carry a U lock and a good amount of extras.

B1 Leather Bag
Great bag that fits your mini U lock and good deal of accessories easily. Don't know why this isn't advertised. The leather is the same cut that's on your Brooks saddle, so it is quite thick/molded. The bag will not lose its shape. The bag features an adjustable closing flap that allows you to tuck the shoulder strap inside which is really useful as I use the strap whenever I park outside and remove the bag from my bike saddle.

Issues:

-It is difficult to remove the bag from saddle loops as the strap needs to be manipulated from inside (often requiring that you remove some of the bag's contents)

-Not an issue with the bag, but more so the Brooks saddle it may be attached to: Eventually the sharp saddle loops on your Brooks will cut into the bag's straps. I'm sure they will honor a warrantee if this happens w/in a year, but otherwise I hope you know an acceptable leather repair shop.

B1 Leather Bag
Always thought a good quality brooks leather handbag that could go on or off the bike a good idea , so was delighted with the RCA collaboration .This is a very attractive cycling "handbag " with all the best style and tradition I'd expect from brooks. However I was disappointed to find that on only the second use, I took the bag out of my bike basket and immediately the strap fell off on one side, as one of the screws inside, that holds the strap on had come off. The bag dosnt look shoddy but the fact that this happens, suggests otherwise. Yes i could tighten up all the screws every now and then, but should i have to? .Is this a design fault ? I expected better from brooks.
