Brompton World Championships 2012
The quadrennial bout of painful withdrawal symptoms, associated with the sudden absence of an orgy of sport in which to wallow when the Olympics finish, will be familiar to many readers. To this end, we have some good news. Because while in Geneva this weekend teams of three fight it out for glory at the World Hardcourt Bike Polo Championships, over at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire it's every man for himself at another competitive cycling event. The 2012 Brompton World Championships. The WHBPC organizers are streaming action from the courts in Switzerland live, and if you're remotely near, Blenheim is always worth a visit in person. Brooks, as ever, is on board at both events in a supportive capacity. With each passing year, the organizers of the BWC have seen increased crowds at the event, both on the start line and behind the cordon tape. The 2012 installment promises to be the biggest yet, and has a couple of new racing categories. A newly introduced marathon distance race of 26 miles or so kicks the day off this Sunday, and along with old favourites like the Fastest Fold, new novelty events like Brompton Balancing and Roller Racing will pack the schedule almost to bursting point. On top of these, there is also a Sprint Contest, and we gather plans are afoot to calculate a Best Overall Performance among the hardy riders who tackle the "Treble", that is, Marathon, Sprint and the World Championship Main Race. Any of those doing so will likely need more than one dress shirt to get them through the day. The Brompton World Championships are famously a Lycra-Free Zone. With racers obliged to dress smartly, the last thing any of them need are unsightly saddlebags of sweat taking the sheen off a good performance.
