Made in England

The Leather Barbican is manufactured in England using the same hardwearing leather used for Brooks Saddles. The Barbican was first developed and is still available in cotton with leather details. Both versions of the bag feature an adjustable shoulder strap that can be easily secured around the waist. The strap can be worn loose to carry the bag over the shoulder while walking. Then, for increased comfort while riding, the two ends of the strap can be pulled together around the waist and fixed as a "Sam Browne" belt.

BARBICAN Hard Leather Shoulder Bag
I purchased one of these bags a couple of months ago. I live and work within Cambridge, and often find myself having to cycle across the city for meetings, and turning up with my scruffy panniers didn't necessarily look the part. What can I say, it is one of the finest pieces of craftsmanship I have ever purchased. It looks and feels terrific out of the box, and even within a couple of months it is beginning to 'break-in' which will only give it more character! It is also very easy to use and comfortable to cycle with. It isn't cheap, but it is fantastic and beautiful - buy one now!

BARBICAN Hard Leather Shoulder Bag
I recently purchased this bag and absolutely love it. I am concerned about the care of the bag... Is there anything particular I need to do in order to protect it from the elements or can I just begin to use without worry? Thanks!
A> Thank you for writing!  Please treat your bag as you would any other leather article, but otherwise no special preparation required before use.

BARBICAN Hard Leather Shoulder Bag
After looking extensively for a messenger bag that was elegant, light (1.5 kg!) and spacious enough for a 15 inch laptop I found this. One of the greatest things I own. Truly amazing workmanship. I have never posted an online comment before but felt compelled in this case. I can't say enough good things about it. You will not be disappointed.

BARBICAN Hard Leather Shoulder Bag
I am about to get one in days. But I also want to know how to maintain this beatiful bag. Should I use some specific leather oil for its surface? How often should I do so? Thanks in advance.
A> No, please do not treat this bag immediately.  Use the bag and treat it after it shows some wear, Proofide may be used for this.

BARBICAN Hard Leather Shoulder Bag
My Barbican bag arrived today. Two words - VERY DISAPPOINTED!

Firstly as a former Brooks saddle customer and a British ex-pat living in Romania I absolutely deplore having to pay 15 Euro for delivery to Romania (Which if you were unaware Brooks - Romania is an EU State) when the Brooks website states free delivery to UK & Europe!

Website:

The Brooks website is lacking detailed pictures and descriptions of the product. This is particularly unhelpful.

Now on to the product itself.

Size:

The webbing strap is far too short. I am 6'4" (194cm) Tall and have a 48" chest. With the webbing fully adjusted wearing the bag across the shoulder, the bag sits slightly above waist level. In attempting to close the front fasteners the bag is then up under my armpit and the webbing is approximately 6" too short to even close across the chest at all!! (Not very satisfactory for a cycling / messenger style bag. In fact I believe the legal term is actually 'unfit for purpose')

Design & Material:

The leather is of good quality, however it is a fairly thin gauge, feels flimsy, and unlikely to last. All seams are only single stitched and where finished the nylon thread that has been used is burnt which leaves annoying sharp bits to catch yourself on. I would have expected the seams of this bag to be double stitched and classic waxed saddlery thread to have been used. - another disappointment. The trim and fittings are of low quality. Brushed mild steel has been used for the shoulder strap reinforcement plates instead of brass and instead of brass or copper rivets the rear reinforcing plate has been fixed with three small countersunk Philips screws on each side. Three out of six screws have been over tightened during assembly ruining the screw heads. Under the flap there is a single strap pierced with 4 adjustable closures which can be fixed to a Sam Browne button. The button is secured to the small leather tab by means of a slotted screw fixing as opposed to quality conventional riveting. Both the strap and button tab are stitched off centre giving the whole bag an annoyingly unbalanced asymmetric look when the flap is open. Inside the bag attached to the inner front, fixed by two steel press studs, is a canvas pocket incorporating a zipped pocket (inaccessible unless you unclip it) , and two further pockets and two spaces for pens. The interior of the bag is not lined. I would have hoped for some form of lining in a bag of this price bracket. The leather flap is cut and shaped in such a way that when closed the corners or shoulders of the bag are fully exposed with big gaps! The flap is secured by means of tucking it behind a flimsy strap that is fixed with single stitching across the middle front of the bag. I would have hoped in addition to the strap to have secured the flap in place with either quality Sam Browne brass tabs, press studs or even some form of magnetic closure! Finally the leather shoulder strap pad is too wide and would benefit from some form of non slip padding. The 72pt Brooks logo which is blind embossed into the shoulder strap is too much! This is more CHAV styling than sophisticated understated British quality!

Price:

Extortionate.

To see how quality bags can be made properly, using quality materials (in a similar price bracket) almost next door to the Brooks operation in Smethwick check out Billingham Bags manufactured in Old Hill www.billingham.co.uk. Unfortunately they don’t make messenger bags.

With this product the Brooks company has failed miserably in their quest for quality and innovation - I’m absolutely certain this product would not have met the approval of John Boultbee Brooks almost 150 years ago.

BARBICAN Hard Leather Shoulder Bag
The bag looks very elegant and is beautifully made. However, the design is cumbersome and insufficient. There is no interior lining, the meager pouch detaches itself very easily, the hard leather shoulder strap cuts into you and the bags contents are very much exposed to the weather.

BARBICAN Hard Leather Shoulder Bag
I bought the barbican hard bag in brown leather 2 years ago and now the textile shoulder strap is worn out. Would it be possible to purchase a new one?

BARBICAN Hard Leather Shoulder Bag
I mostly like this bag a lot, but partly through the addition of velcro which holds the flap down a bit better: if you want to get odd sized things in, or overfill it a bit, then the absence of anything to hold the flap down is quite annoying.

BARBICAN Hard Leather Shoulder Bag
I've had a few Barbican bags over the years and own a few satchels too. I have to agree with recent comments, the leather used now is a lot more flimsy than as recent as 4 years ago. Cutting costs I guess but still priced the same. Will have to see how long the current one lasts for but to be fair to Brooks any problems with any products they will accommodate you.

BARBICAN Hard Leather Shoulder Bag
While I am satisfied with the craftsmanship and attention to detail of this messenger bag, I am quite disappointed by its ergonomics.

As an urban cyclist I find the fit of the bag, while on bike (with road geometry), with or without the belt function, fit as terrible as having a cardboard box on my back. While the shoulder strap needs breaking in it is also too wide.

I am 5'11 and wears medium apparel and I find the shoulder strap constantly cutting into my neck (without the belt function) and constantly slipping around (with belt option) because of its 'hard' leather.

Also problematic is the length of the adjustable should strap. There seems to be an irreconcilable balance between making a setting that can be both conformable while walking and not too low while cycling.

When cycling, you will have to engage the waist belt function if you do not want your bag to go over the saddle. But if the length of the strap was set to short enough length (without belt function) then a rather long loose end flaps around freely.

This bag is not for everyone. I believe a person of wider and taller stature than myself will find it more fitting.
