The B66 and B66 S are among BROOKS’s most loved products, having been on the market since 1927. Classically sprung with double rails for supreme comfort, B66 and B66 S are the ideal all-rounders for daily city or touring use in a rather upright posture. They are most appropriate for cyclists who set their handlebars higher than their saddles. In general, the more upright your riding posture, the wider, and more heavily sprung, the saddle you should choose.

Re-establishing an old Brooks tradition

Written by Matti Ojanen from Finland 6/17/2010

I bought a B66 for my bicycle last summer. It doubled the value of the bike and the ride comfort improved even more! I was proud of my saddle. But last week someone stole the bicycle. I don't care for the bike, it was not that good. But the Brooks B66! I miss it. Luckily I hadn't bought the Brooks grips yet.

Now I need a new saddle and a bicycle, Pashley Roadster seems to have a Brooks B33 as standard...

Have recently bought a B67 with single rail for my new Chas Roberts bike and now it is almost broken in, it is shaping up to become a favourite just like my other two B66 saddles. I have ridden this pattern of Brooks saddle since 1978 both for utility cycling and longer tours. I would not dream of using anything other than a leather saddle. Like one of your other contributors, I've been irritated by saddle squeak which I managed to cure with proofhide on the under side of the seat and a good squirt of WD40 around the spring unit - result silence for the last 300 miles and long may it last. All my husband's and our family's bikes have Brooks saddles including several B17s and one old but until recently unused B15.

I recently purchased a Brooks B67 saddle for my elderly Dawes Galaxy as the saddle which I bought with it was very uncomfortable. The new saddle was carefully broken in in accordance with your instructions.
I am writing to let you know that I used it on a 3 week, 520 mile cycle holiday in the south of France earlier this month and found it a great success.
I am 63 years old and have come rather late to cycle touring but your saddle certainly proved its worth for a man of my age and tonnage. We cycled between 25 and 40 miles a day over varying types of terrain, with full panniers and campng gear aboard the bike but at no time during the trip did I experience any Moscow Syndrome i.e. numbski bumski - as experienced with the 'modern' saddle on my second bike - even after a ride of some 50 miles.
The saddle required some tensioning when I got home but that was all apart from a dressing of polish. The saddle has definitely improved my enjoyment as I no longer suffer any discomfort. It was well worth the cost of purchase. I have already recommended it to another cyclist of my vintage. Thanks very much.
Yours faithfully
Phil Chester

Dear Sirs, I am writing to let you know how very pleased I am with a B66 saddle that I bought yesterday. I had a Raleigh Superbe cycle in 1952 fitted with an identical saddle and it is fascinating to find that the quality of the new one is exactly as I remember the earlier one. Even the box and the enclosed leaflets are works of art. I had no idea that you still made such a range of traditional cycle accessories - my next purchase is likely to be a Millbrook Holdall. Also, you are to be congratulated on your excellent website where I have just spent a very enjoyable half-hour. With Thanks, Yours faithfully, Tony

In 1989 I did a Bicycle Tour in the Cotswolds with an organized tour group-based in New York. I'm from New Jersey. The rest of the group -about a dozen all together -were from all over the USA and had hired their bikes. I met them at Heathrow sans bike. I wanted a Raleigh 3 speed to use then take home. The bike I bought was a Raleigh Courier. It came with dynamo lighting and a carrier-which I used after the 9 day tour to hold my luggage.
The seat was a padded vinyl covered plastic thing and not all too comfortable. I had a Dawes Galaxy back home with a Brooks Professional on it. Two years later I went to pick up the bike by its plastic seat and managed to crack it in the process! I couldn't get a Brooks B66 over here at the time so I wrote to the shop I purchased the bike from in Oxford. He sent me a catalogue.
WHAT A MAJOR IMPROVEMENT!! 15 years on and many miles of riding including the New York 5 Boros Tour at least a half dozen times and other tours it is still on the bike! Since then I just took delivery of a Millbrook Saddle Bag!

Hello Everybody, I am so satisfied with my BROOKS. I am planning a trip from Holland to Southern French sponsored by BEIXO. Of course I need a good saddle so I tried every saddle there was on the market, but left the BROOKS on the shelf. Just couldn' t believe that this relative cheap and hard leather saddle can save me from my bottom and knee pain that I have during training. After I tried almost every hightech gel and....... saddles, I just end by the BROOKS. I thought OK lets try it there is no options left. And what do you think happens? I think I don' t have to tell that. My pain was gone from the moment I sat on this old mirakel. Just want to say thanks and watch my track on www.beixo.com Best regards Servan Schreiber

I got a Brooks B67 saddle a few weeks ago and I must say that I am loving it! I have had no end of problems trying to get a saddle that suited my backside. The saddle that came on my last bike actually caused me a pelvic sprain by pushing my seat-bones apart! I tried those GEL saddles. They are okay if you are only going to ride for about 20 minutes. My bicycle is made for commuting AND long-distance touring. Only a few weeks after using the B67, my backside was singing because no more was I suffering from pressure in the softer parts of my nether regions, and the springs just ironed out all the annoying little bumps and jolts in the road. I am looking forward to a long-distance tour on my new B67. It is really quite astonishing how comfortable they are! My friends poke it with their fingers and say that it is hard and can't be comfortable, but I tell them that I happily spend all day riding with it under my backside. I run my bicycle lock through the frame of the saddle because I don't want it stolen. Thieves can have the rest of my bicycle - I want to keep that saddle!

I bought a Brooks saddle last year as I was unhappy with sitting on the non-fitting plastic stuff that heats up your a.. and the sitting bones beside when this special part of your antonomy should be cooled ...
I bought a new bike with a Brooks saddle and didn't even realize sitting down!
After a very short time the saddle fits my behind and its really effortless cycling from then on! I have done more than 1000km on my first bike and also bought one for my second bike - it#s really fun to ride with such a saddle!

I used to have such a beautiful B66 Saddle, on the city bike i got from my uncle some years ago. The ravages of time began to gnaw on that bike (It's some years older than me), and I purchased a new one. I mounted the old B66 on it and was happy with it until it got stolen recently, and now, the part of that bike that I miss the most is the saddle!
Thieves, please at least leave the seddles of a bike to the owner!

I have always enjoyed cycling to school and in recent years, long weekend cycles through the Mourne mountains (N.Ireland) where I live. It was probably listening to members of my family talk of the famous Brooks Saddles of times gone by that gave me the curosity to research the well known brand. I went with my instincts and ordered a black Champion Flyer for my Claud Butler Classic and I am glad I did. Apart from the great comfort these saddles provide, it has made me realise that often the modern products of the disposable world we now live in, are often not the best choice. With my Brooks saddle I began to enjoy the journeys more and saw the bicycle less as a mode of transport to get from A to B. In December past ('07) my Brooks saddle inspired me to go the whole way and, with money I had saved up I bought a Pashley Roadster Classic with a nice big B66 saddle which complements the bike really well. Out for a cycle the the other day, I passed through Tollymore Park (an old estate where the big house has been knocked down but many of the traditional eighteenth century gothic follies still remain) where I took the photo above. For me, Brooks saddles are summed up in that well known saying, 'Life is a Journey, Not just a destination,' taking the time to enjoy cycling and admiring the landscape as you pass it by is a great thing to do, and I thank You that the high quality saddles you make allow so many people to do just that.        Willis

In 2003 I joined the ROPARUN as a bicyclist to guide the runners. The ROPARUN is the longest estafette contest in the world. The goal is to collect money for charity: "To add quality time to days in a situation where no days can be added to life". By the time I reached Paris, I had driven 400km in 40 hours to join the runners and to shoot pictures of our team. And as effect, my buttocks had severe damage and were not alive any more... I had one additional "problem". I had invited a friend to Paris in order to drive my fully loaded bicycle (with tent, etc) 900 km back to Holland. After 8 days's I was not able to sit normally anymore.
At home, I checked the internet and found out about Brooks saddles. I bought the B66, second hand. Because I drove usually 30 km per day I (thought I) didn't notice any differences, other then some noise coming from the Brooks saddle. So instead of advantages compared to my previous ordinary saddle, it had one major disadvantage: noise coming from the springs...
In januari 2004 I replaced my Brooks saddle again for my old one. Within 30 km I finally noticed the difference, did some maintenance on the B66 and placed it back on my bike. Yes, I was convinced and addicted to Brooks. Recently I have driven a 430km tour in 40 hours, without any damage at "the end of my back"...
Because of this little "success" story, I convinced 4 other bicyclists (including my wife) and they have bought Brooks saddles as well.

COMMENT > As the proud owner of a 1950s Humber roadster with Brooks B66 saddle, I appreciate the quality of all things Brooks. I have the original saddle for the bike (a B73 I think) but think the B66 looks nicer somehow.
I do have one criticism though - the standard of English used in some of the replies to these comments. They are obviously not written by a native English speaker. I know this because I am an English as a Foreign Language teacher and the mistakes are typical of those by some of my students. Am I correct, or has the standard of English in UK schools fallen even further than feared during my 15 years teaching abroad?

REPLY > You are right, the standard of English is the one of a non native English speaker. We are a small company, but rather international and not all members of our staff are English. We apologize to you for this, but rather than not having this section updated frequently, we prefer to let whoever in our staff has time answer to the questions, even if the English is not perfect :)

COMMENT > I have had a few Brooks saddles, most of them at my pleasure after a few weeks of 'getting used to each other' My bikes with Brooks saddles tend to get stolen every now and then.
So I bought a new bike, with a new Brooks saddle. After about one year I had to stretch the saddle. But then the sides of the saddle became to wide, therefore hindering my legs to move smootly. It seems that this latest Brooks saddle has weaker leather than my previous ones. Since the saddles problem caused me too much pain I had to buy another one, non-leather saddle. Stil not so nice as a good Brooks....
Since a good saddle is not chap I did not try for another Brooks again... Anyone here that can persuade me to go back to Brooks again?

REPLY > Leather being a natural material can vary from hide to hide and within the same hide from the center to the end of the butt. So each Brooks saddle is unique and can be softer or stiffer. You might have bought a soft one! Anyway if your problem are the flaps opening you can punch holes and tie them together as we do on the Aged and Imperial lines. Or simply buy a B67 Aged or B68 Imperial, which have the same exact shape of the B66. If you like the B66 but want to spend less, try the B67, which is slightly cheaper because it has single rails.

Q > I recently bought a Pilen Swedish Classic bike. It rolls silently and like a dream, however, the B66 saddle makes a lot of noise during riding, probably coming from the springs and suspension. Is this normal and acceptable?

A > Some squeaking can happen. It is normally due to the rubbing between the leather top and the metal parts, either on the nose or on the back plate. Try to put some Proofide where you believe the squeaking is coming from.
