Re-establishing an old Brooks tradition

Written by Jeremy Lewis from United King 9/8/2009

I have treated myself to a new Pashley Princess Sovereign 22.5" frame and to finish it off for casually riding around have installed a Brick Lane Roll-up panier, a black D saddle bag and a B190 saddle. It looks just magnificent and it is obviously is real quality kit. This will be a case of quality remembered when price forgotten. Compared to the price my daughters spend on handbags these bags are extremly well made and good value for money.

Fantastic bag! I live in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and ride a cross bike. Extreme weather from blizzards, to rain, wind, and heat can happen in one afternoon. The bag has been doused and dragged through ice and mud and has held up exceptionally well. Enough room for a spare tube, tools, wallet, and phone. Convenient for sliding out and going into the coffee shop. I wouldn't trade this bag if you paid me double for it. Well, maybe. Then I could buy two.

Of course these bags are expensive. Quality always is. You can always find someone who makes things cheaper. But sheer quality and beauty - gently improving as the item gets older - is still appreciated by the buyer long, long after the cost has been forgotten.

Having purchased a honey-colored B17 for my vintage road bike, it seemed entirely appropriate to add a D-Shaped Tool Bag. In addition to my small set of tools, the inner purse safely encloses a spare tube, my ID, a credit card, and my iPhone.
The bag works so well - and so does the saddle - that when I'm out for a long ride I put both on my modern road bike, too.

Q > Lovely Tool Bag, no doubt about it. But, does include any tool? if it does... which ones? Thank you for creating such products.

A > No, there are no tools inside!

Q > Is the challenge bag leather?

A > Yes, the Challenge, D-Shaped and Tool Roll are entirely made of leather, the same European Leather we use for our saddles.

Q > I just purchased a D-shaped Tool Bag. Since I have two bikes with Brooks Saddles, I'd like to use the bag on each bike. Is it possible to purchase a second holder? That way I could have two holders "permanently attached" to the saddles and just move the bag.

A > Currently it is not possible, but this is a good idea, so thanks for sharing it.

Q > Will it come in green?

A > It's already available... Just click on the left arrow of the colour options!

Please let me know if you move production back to the UK so that I can buy this bag. I am one of those cranky customers that doesn't want to hang a MADE IN CHINA product from my saddle.

A>  The D-Shaped has been made in England now for nearly one year!

Written by Douglas Darter from United Kingdom, England 5/20/2009

COMMENT >>> I Have used Brooks saddles for over 40 years. The Glenbrook is an excellent piece of equipment, and will fulfill it's function admirably. I do feel however extremely disappointed. Given the Brooks 'heritage', one would have expected this item to have been manufactured in the UK, as are the saddles and other leather goods - this is what Brooks would have you believe. Imagine my disappointment when I read the 'Made in China' label on the display card.

REPLY >>> Brooks Saddle Bags and Holdalls are original designs of the early 1900's and of the 1950's and have not been produced by the company for many decades. Therefore we have not the skills and machinery to produce them in house. Brooks are doing their best to keep production in the UK and in Europe, but some products are nowadays hardly manufactured in the old continent with the quality standards required to be Brooks products. We still make all our saddles in England and many other products in Europe. Regarding our bags, yes, some are made in China. After trying to start production in the UK and Italy we realized that the quality was not good enough for Brooks, therefore we moved manufacturing to China. It is hard to imagine for most people, but China is delivering the highest quality stitching nowadays. We didn’t choose our supplier purely for cost reasons, but for the quality it can deliver.

We believe that in a world which is highly connected, predjudices should fall. You should see our supplier’s factory in China before expressing negative comments on the sourcing. Last, but not least, could you please check where the computer you are using is manufactured? Ours are Mac and they claim “designed by Apple in California. Assembled in China”. We bought them anyway. We trust that Apple is not having their computers assembled using children labour or in disrespect of other human rights... To conclude, we are still looking for alternative suppliers in the UK, but so far we have not found one. We hope you can change your mind, otherwise we accept that people have different opinions.

I love my D-Shaped Tool Bag, and it sits below my B17. My only concern is that the metal rivet/lug that loks the bag into place inside the carrier has come undone and fallen off. This was of great concern as I hold my wallet inside the bag. is one able to purchase a replacment part? I still have the screw only missing the top.

A> Yes, you could adapt using the replacement mushroom piece from the spare parts section for use with the Barbican.

I love the D-shaped tool bag, holds everything I need. Not happy with the way it hangs ,it leans into the seatmost, most photos ,i saw have it hanging straight down, any help welcome..................THANKS

A> We are considering a bracket for this, but for now you will have to put up with this peculiarity.

Just ordered aCooper T100 Spa, and was looking for a tool bag to go with the green Swallow saddle, this looks perfect, but it seems there havebeen lots of issues with sub-standard rivets. Now that manufacturing has shifted, has this problem been addressed? A lot of money to pay for something I might have to fix ina short while.

A> We are not aware of any shift in our manufacturing, or any change in the rivets we use; which are by the way of the highest quality.

A> The D-Shaped bag is now MADE IN ENGLAND!

It is a great shame that a customer from Bilston, only a few miles from Smethwick, tries to support local industry only to see that the bag is made in China. A great shame for those who wish to buy quality local products.

Written by kenneth cooke from UK 7/11/2011

A> There are many reasons why companies produce in China, and price is not always the answer.  However, after much (much) effort we are proud to announce that the D-Shaped in now MADE IN ENGLAND!

Q> Why is it that manufacturers think they can get away with having thier products turned out in China but still charge Western European prices. I have recently had a similar problem with a Mulberry Bag which there again has made it's name by offering astonishingly well made English leather products only to start making in China and charging full on Western European prices. If these manufacturers want to cut us as customers in on the deal then so be it.

I would happily buy Brooks, Mulberry, in fact any quality brand stamped Made in China if they wanted to sell me thier products half the price of UK or Made in England sourced products. These companies are ripping us off.

A> We are terribly sorry for neglecting to post the dimensions of this bag, which are, 16cm x 8cm x 4cm.

Q>  Dear ladies and gentlemen,

For all your toolbags I directly find their dimensions on the main site of the product.
Besides the D-Shaped Tool Bag.....
Therefore: Do I need to buy new glasses? Or could you please provide me and other curious customers with this information?

Kind regards from Belgium

After purchasing my Brooks saddle I was very anxious to attach a Brooks bag to it. I choose the D-Shaped tool bag. The D-shaped bag is very attractive and looked amazing with my honey colored saddle. BUT I was very concerned at the way the bag wanted to swing under my saddle. It didn't sit upright. No matter how tightly I tried to secure the straps I was very concerned that the rivets would pull away. I never got a satisfactory rely to my concern and now, a year later, one of the rivets has ripped away from the strap. I now think the bag was designed for a saddle with springs that would keep the bag up right. I have returned my bag to the dealer. I also noticed on the comment page that Greg w. from UK had the same problem. I'm glad to read that the bag has a two year warranty

Written by Greg Willis from UK 2/25/2011

I fitted this beautiful saddle bag on to the back of an equally new (and beautiful) B17 saddle, it looks the dogs danglers! Plenty of internal storage, great design of the inner purse makes everything really accessible. But... the rivets holding the strap on gave up on one side during the first 20 mins on the road (all i had in the bag was a tube, multi tool and puncture kit, so no real weight). On inspection, these rivets looked weak given the fact that they bear the brunt of the load. I considered returning the item, but decided I had no confidence on the rivets (which would obviously be the same kind as the weak ones) so replaced them on each side with more substantial rivets. A fantastic product marred by this potentially costly (for me if i had lost the bag, these are not cheap) issue.

A> This bag has a two-year warranty, send it back!  Sorry for your trouble!

I purchased a Honey Brown Brook D-shaped tool bag about a year and half ago.

I love the leather quality, the style, the size and the functionality of the bag.

However, after using it every day on my bike, i have had to replace:

1. The zipper after about a year of use - it now has a nylon zipper instead of a metal / cloth zipper which broke after about a year of use.

2. The rivets that hold the fastening straps onto the bag with a larger more sturdy rivet. (One popped through and the other one was about to.)

So this is what I would recommend for Brooks to do:

1. Install a heavier nylon zipper instead of using a metal / cloth zipper.

2. Install a larger set of rivets that fasten the straps.

A> We are sorry for your disappointing experience, please remember that this bag, and all other Brooks products are covered by a 2-year warranty against defects in materials and manufacturing.

D-shaped bag is a wonderful thing. I find it slightly too small, though - spare tube and puncture kit and multi-tool just about fills it, leaving little room for my keys and none at all for my phone.
